Why I have no Problem with the Ghibli AI art.
All the art of living lies in a fine mingling of letting go and holding on -Havelock Ellis
I have been a long-time studio Ghibli fan, I enjoy Hayo Miyazaki writing and animation since I was teenager. I have no problem with AI generators producing studio Ghibli art. Last year in 2024 Miyazaki produced his last animation “The boy and the Heron’ a movie about a boy who mother dies during a World war two air raid. His father remarries and they move to the country village, to large old house; where the boy follows a Herron into an abandoned town to find his dead mother, they travel through the abandon world only to be greeted by an old man the Parakeet King who insist Mahito the boy should build a better world for Parakeet King. Mahito refuses and the labyrinth of the world collapses. A movie about Hao Miyazaki world collapsing and closing of the studio because he could not find the right person that would not destroy his art in animation.
Being a huge fan of Studio Ghibli I usually enjoy introducing his animations to my friends and family. Some of them might not get the art, and consider it childish or silly but that is what I enjoy about his art. His complex character, story building, was supposed to be shared and enjoyed by many to last through generations and re-watched again.
Should we really be Gatekeeping something that is technically over. To we want people to forget his movies and his animations. Because as a longtime fan I don’t want his movies to be forgotten as a moment in time to be forgotten, because a group of people on the internet decided to gate keep his artwork.
I think he would be happy, because his art is living on through the internet, people that have not heard about him. They will now be curious about his animations and will probably go watch Howl’s Moving Castle or Spirited Away. Giving the old movies life again with a new audience to depict what message he is sending in his movies.
It will never be his true Art, but it will leave a fond memory and reminiscing of his old artwork and movies. Which have people talking about studio Ghibli to find his movies online.
AI generated Studio Ghibli
This should have stayed in the drafts. Miyazaki has expressed that AI is an affront to life itself, an insult to a studio that is meticulous in its art. The added irony is the energy required to power this AI engine is contributing to climate change, when so many Ghibli works, especially Miyazaki’s, focus on the damage the human machine does to the natural world. They don’t need a fad to build their brand, as one of the most popular and respected animation houses in the world.
like someone else also mentioned in the comments, ghibli is not some underground studio, and its movies are globally known. your argument means nothing in this case. also if you know how ai 'art' is created, you would know it is not only disrespectful to hayao miyazaki himself, but also disrespectful to all of the people who put so many hours and effort into crafting the movies. i'm pretty sure miyazaki wouldn't want his movies be appreciated through something so low as a 'trend'.
